I listened to this song again when it was mentioned in Matthew Perpetua’s interview with Rob Sheffield. It’s on the album Fever right before “Can’t Get You Out of My Head”, making it the first punch in a perfect one-two combo of blissful twirl-in-your-underoos pop music.
When I hear a pop song this good, I think back on my high school days, when a misbegotten set of masculine aesthetic values (which I would have characterized as an interest only in “real music”) would have deterred me from enjoying it, even though it is transparently excellent.
As I get older, I have come not just to love songs like this but to need songs like this. Life only gets more complicated, after all, and you don’t help it along by denying yourself expressions of pure joy.
